it's
a colour combination that would make most women
cringe, but for the Red Hat Society vibrant reds
and purples are de rigueur.
For the North shore
branch of the international phenomena, dubbed the
red backs, getting together for a giggle is an essential
part of life.
Founded by Texan-born Annette Crawford, the red
backs group of over-50s women has coffee several
times a month, plus a slap-up lunch one Sunday a
month.
"It used to be
when women got to a certain age they got invisible,"
member Carol Diependaal said.
"We are going
to live our lives and be as colourful and flamboyant
as we can possible be.
"We are going
to be out there and enjoy our lives, and to hell
with the grandchildren."
Far from wallflowers,
the group of women who come from all around the
world try to outdo each other every month with the
outrageous red hats paired with bright purple outfits
for which they are famous.
"It isn't for everybody. Most of our group
are a little more outrageous than some," Mrs
Diependaal said.
"If you are comfortable
with a little flamboyance it's great."
For women under 50, there is a sub-category of membership
- the pink hats - with full membership being granted
as the half century ticks over.
As well as their regular
North Shore get-together, the group often ventures
out to the fish Markets, Cabramatta and other Sydney
Shopping spots.
