Welcome to the Sydney Chapter of the Red Hat Society - The Red backs

Life is not a journey to the grave with the
intention of arriving safely
in a pretty and well preserved body,
but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up,
totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming --
-- WOW -- What a Ride!

Welcome to the Red Backs Chapter of the Australian Red Hats Society. Anyone can join who is willing to wear purple and a red hat. It was started for 50+ year old ladies, but we are not prejudiced. We encourage women to extend their personal boundaries, push their comfort zones, but only to their personal limits. There are no directors or rules for membership, just be willing to have fun, laugh at yourself and wear purple with a red hat. The extent you go to is up to you! We don't need any special talents or money, just a bit of Gumption. Our name suggests how silly & frivolous we intend to be. Imagine naming our chapter after a Red Back Spider who is notorious for hiding under toilet seats??

This chapter - The Redbacks - was founded by Annette Crawford.

"I take care of a 4 year old and she wore one of my red hats to our last tea and loved it. We have only been going since September 2001. I started it because I was bored after returning from a year in Alaska. We have a small group at present, our oldest member is 80. We meet at Gloria Jeans Coffee in St Leonards on Willoughby Road plus other selected venues. The shop is next to the Baptist Church, it's also called Crows Nest, but it's nearest train station is St Leonards. I have framable copies of the poem and have given one to each of the ladies. I have mine framed in my bedroom next to my red hat."  - Annette

The Red Hat Society began in the USA, as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor, and elan. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and, since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together.

Sue Ellen Cooper, Queen Mother, February 6, 2001 USA
